ABU DHABI: Etihad Airways has officially launched its first flight to Atlanta, adding the city to its expanding global network and marking the carrier’s fifth US gateway.

The inaugural flight from Zayed International Airport landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Wednesday, connecting the US Southeast with Abu Dhabi and the wider Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Asia.

The new route, initially operating four times a week, uses Etihad’s state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The service comes amid a strategic push to meet growing demand for travel between the UAE and the United States, particularly among business travellers, leisure seekers, and those visiting friends and relatives.

Atlanta joins New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, and Boston as part of Etihad’s North American network. The strong response to the launch has already prompted the airline to confirm a daily service starting from November 2025.

Preclearance advantage

Passengers flying from Abu Dhabi benefit from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance at Zayed International Airport – the only facility of its kind in the region. This allows travellers to complete US immigration and customs procedures prior to departure, enabling them to arrive in the US as domestic passengers and significantly reduce processing times upon arrival.

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, highlighted Atlanta’s strategic importance. “Atlanta is a dynamic city with deep cultural, economic, and aviation significance. This new service enhances access to the southeastern United States while offering seamless connections across our network,” he said.

Increased access to Abu Dhabi

The launch is expected to drive inbound tourism to the UAE capital, particularly from the Southern US region. Etihad’s move provides easier access for American travellers eager to explore Abu Dhabi’s growing list of attractions, which include cultural institutions, white-sand beaches, luxury resorts, and major theme parks.

According to the airline, interest from the US market in Abu Dhabi has surged, with strong early bookings leading to the decision to accelerate the transition from four weekly flights to a daily service by late 2025.

Onboard features

The A350-1000 aircraft offers Etihad’s latest onboard experience. Business Class features 44 private suites with sliding doors, fully flat 79-inch beds, wireless charging docks, and 18.5-inch entertainment screens. Passengers also benefit from Bluetooth headphone pairing and noise-cancelling headsets.

In Economy Class, 327 Smart Seats include 13-inch touchscreen monitors, USB-C ports, and an adjustable recline for improved comfort. All guests have access to complimentary messaging through the aircraft’s Wi-Fi, with full internet browsing available for an additional charge.

Strong market signals

With the resumption of international travel and sustained post-pandemic demand from the US, Etihad sees the Atlanta service as a key part of its strategy to strengthen transatlantic routes. Load factors for the new route have already exceeded expectations across both corporate and leisure segments.

“The response to this route has been phenomenal,” said Neves. “It’s a clear sign that travellers are eager to discover everything Abu Dhabi has to offer.”
